TOP-PHOS: One Solution to Combat Eutrophication
Eutrophication is a significant environmental challenge, primarily caused by the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. The resulting accumulation of nutrients, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), in natural water bodies leads to detrimental effects such as algal blooms, oxygen depletion, and the decline of aquatic ecosystems.
To address this issue, TIMAC AGRO offers TOP-PHOS®, a groundbreaking form of monocalcium phosphate that plays a crucial role in reducing nutrient runoff and protecting our waterways.
What is TOP-PHOS®?
TOP-PHOS® is an exclusive, innovative form of monocalcium phosphate. Its unique chemical structure offers superior phosphorus protection, reducing the risk of phosphorus losses and preventing its accumulation in surface water. By doing so, TOP-PHOS® helps mitigate the effects of eutrophication.
How is Top-Phos fighting Eutrophication ?
To demonstrate the efficacy of TOP-PHOS®, a detailed trial was conducted on maize by Ecole d’Agronomie de Purpan in 2013. The study took place in clay-type soil with a pH of 7.1, organic matter content of 1.7%, and P Olsen of 24 mg/kg. The trial protocol included the application of 170 kg/ha of N, 75 kg/ha of P₂O₅, and 80 kg/ha of K₂O. The fertilizer treatments evaluated were:

- N
- Control (no fertility)
The results of the trial are impressive :
- Nitrogen Uptake: +14% increase compared to the control.
- Sulfur Uptake: +17% increase compared to the control.
- Phosphorus Uptake: +8% increase compared to the control.
