TIMAC AGRO Canada announces a multi-year scientific collaboration with the University of Calgary aiming at contributing to the advancement of national research related to drought tolerance on canola as well as nitrous oxide emissions reductions in Canadian agriculture.
Calgary, February 2, 2023 – The University of Calgary joins hands with Timac Agro Canada to conduct an ambitious multi-year research project targeting at providing sustainable and performant agriculture solutions for growers across the country.
Building-up on research results demonstrating increased drought tolerances on canola.
Boasting a presence in 41 counties, TIMAC AGRO is a pioneer in soil, plant and animal nutrition with more than 3,600 representatives visiting 20,000 farms per day. TIMAC AGRO also relies on a vast network of over 150 scientific partnerships to help validate and demonstrate the benefits of its technologies for farmers.
In Canada, one of these benefits was highlighted during a two-year project (2020-2022) led by Dr. Marcus Samuel (Professor, Department of Biological Sciences). This project confirmed the benefits of TIMAC AGRO’s biostimulants in promoting drought tolerance on canola, an issue faced by numerous amount of growers across the country. These results were showcased at the American Society of Plant Biologists / Canadian Society of Plant Biologists joint conference in Oregon in July 2022.
“Through our previous collaboration, we demonstrated the efficiency of TIMAC AGRO Extracts in conferring improved biomass, stand establishment and drought tolerance on canola. Furthermore, the laboratory findings were corroborated by 376 field demonstrations conducted over the same period by TIMAC AGRO teams in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

From the laboratory to the field: expanding potential correlation between phosphorus use efficiency and nitrous oxide emission reductions
Throughout their research project, the University of Calgary and TIMAC AGRO will be seeking to bring the laboratory to the field and validate assumptions over a broad range of crops and soil types.
Another segment of the research project will involve TIMAC AGRO’s Top Phos, an award-winning complexed superphosphate fertilizer introduced in 2019 in Canada. This technology is being adopted by growing amount of farmers seeking to maximize phosphorus use efficiency, notably by avoiding P tie-up and blockage occurrences in their soils.
“Recent Scientific publications established a potential correlation between phosphorus use efficiency and the reduction of nitrous oxide emissions. In the context of the Federal Government’s emission reduction targets, we believe that this could be an interesting angle of research to explore further through the Top Phos technology” says Dr. Samuel
In the context of today’s announcement, TIMAC AGRO Canada teams will be presenting further updates on their current activities at the University of Calgary on February 6th as well as attending the Canadian Agri-Retailer Conference in Edmonton on February 7th and 8th.
